The way I compose and record my music shares the same thought processes that I employ in my art - laying down initial tracks of spontaneous material then editing back into it to reveal the potential of the piece ('embracing the happy accident') followed by more layers of sound, editing and so on - letting the piece develop seemingly of it's own accord. Order out of chaos, with an element of synesthesia thrown in. Increasingly I am using location field recordings in my work and investigating soundscapes for use in immersive art installations.
Full recording of a live performance at St Mary's Church, Bungay, Suffolk, UK 30/11/23
For those interested in the set up, I selected five synthesisers to use for this performance: Moog Subsequent 37 (bass), Microkorg, Korg MS200 and Roland SH32 (for preset sequencer lines) and Roland V-Synth (for improvised melodies over the top), plus TomCat for snares played throught the Moog. This was all controlled via the Arturia Keystep Pro. All instruments went through a Mackie mixer and routed to the venue sound system.
